Bill is a seasoned PGA Teaching Professional with over five decades of experience, having earned his PGA membership in 1970 and been honored as a PGA Life Member since 1996. He is also a Core-Breathing Certified Instructor, a distinction he has held since 2009. Currently, Bill serves as a Teaching Professional at Del Mar Golf Center, a position he has held since 2019, where he continues to inspire golfers of all levels with his deep expertise and passion for the game. Prior to Del Mar, Bill was a Teaching Professional at Mission Bay Golf Course & Practice Center in San Diego, where he spent 15 years from 2004 to 2019. Before that, he served as the Director of Instruction at the prestigious La Costa Resort from 1988 to 2004. Bill's decades of commitment to teaching and mentoring golfers have earned him a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and respected instructors in the golf community.

Golf newbie's welcomed here!
If you're looking for instruction that is easy to follow, educational, and will dramatically improve your golf game keep reading...
Prior to my first golf lesson, I was a little nervous as I didn't know what to expect. As a women who wanted to take up golf, I wanted the proper instructor and environment that would allow me to feel comfortable and not judged for being a beginner.
Scheduling a lesson with Bill was very easy! I simply called and set a time that worked with my schedule, and he was very flexible with dates and times.
Bill's setup is very easy to spot at the driving range. Just look for the black tented setup with camera and signs that say "Bill Westerlund's Golf Instruction". Helpful Hint: The first time I drove to Mission Bay Golf Course, Google maps dropped me off at the back of the golf course by the tennis club. Be sure you are at the entrance by the Mission Bay RV Park and not the tennis club.
Bill is very patient and educational. He focuses on teaching the power of core breathing techniques and using that breath as energy while playing. He gives you step by step instructions on position and angles of what your body should be doing while swinging. He also films you and will analyze the tape right there after you swing. This is so helpful, as I am a visual and hands on learner and this allowed us to see what I was doing right and wrong. Bill would compare the film to a pro like Tiger Woods or Michelle Wie, and then I could apply what he instructed me to make changes. His breathing technique really works!
After my first golf lesson, all of my initial nervousness turned into a new found passion for golfing. His instructions are not only for the advanced golfer, but for a beginner like me. I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn or improve their golf game.

I took 2 privates with Bill and then 6 weeks of small group lessons. We had a group of four and met once a week in the evenings. Before I started, I had never even picked up a club. After two months of lessons, I played in a Scramble (on an Executive course at Liberty Station) and I pretty much kicked ass!
Bill is straightforward and knowledgeable. He clearly knows everything about the game and has great techniques that both beginners and the more advanced golfers can benefit from. There was one very experienced golfer in my group who said his swing improved immensely after our group lessons. Bill is extremely thorough in explaining everything, from how to hold a club, to the science behind the breathing. The core breathing techniques really worked!
His prices are very reasonable for the level of one-on-one attention. He worked out something that worked for the four of us and it was a great deal. Also, we had a younger member in our group, so he's open to teaching children also.
Bill's also hilarious and patient. He had to put up with a lot between me and my equally high-strung, yappy girlfriend and he took our antics in stride. I was intimidated to start this new sport, but with Bill's help, I'm feeling pretty comfortable. I'll definitely be back for more lessons soon. Highly recommend!

I began taking lessons from Bill a few weeks ago. I found him from a google search. I really enjoy his teaching methods. When I started taking lessons I had a little bit of experience under my belt, but let's face it, much like a lot of golfers I wasn't very good.
Bill's teaching method is very simple and easy to understand. He has a camera so he can do a video analysis of your swing. This is cool because he is able to pinpoint areas of your swing that need improvement. Bill is friendly and doesn't stare at the clock during your lesson.
I like that Bill instructs at the Mission Bay golf course because it is a more laid back environment. This is very positive when you are nervous about learning and having people watch you. Bill is a great instructor and I recommend him to anyone looking to learn or improve their game.

Bill has improved my swing and golf over past few months. He is friendly, and has a very unique approach to the golf swing. Instead of telling me to "relax" or whatever common golf swing comments, he says completely different things, like pressing on your toes, how to breath while swinging.
How do you "relax" your muscles while you are actively swinging? Bill at least tells to give focus on certain muscles, so that my shoulder and arms are more relaxed while swinging.
He also uses a high speed camera, so you can check and discuss your swing together.

Bill is very knowledgeable on the game of golf and understands that everyone is at a different level of skill and he works with you to get the max potential out of your swing. Literally with a few tweaks I was able to get twelve more yards out of my 7 iron, no joke.
