About your drum coach

Michael Malinowski is a freelance drummer and percussionist who has performed with artists such as Blue Man Group and Sheila E. Growing up in Los Angeles, he had the privilege of performing at some of the biggest venues in LA, including the Hollywood Bowl, Ford amphitheater, and Microsoft Theater. Michael graduated from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, at California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in Percussion Performance. Teaching Philosophy: “I create a fun and friendly environment for teaching music lessons. The lessons are completely tailored to YOU, the student. We create goals based on exactly what you want to learn - whether you want to read music, prepare for an audition, or start a band and have fun! With 13 years teaching experience, I have proven results of students progressing in their musical careers and having a great time along the way.”

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonMy first lesson is more of getting to know you, and you getting to know me. After quick intros, I’ll assess your playing level and discuss your music goals. Then, we can jump right into exercises or songs that fit accordingly.
Lesson 11+I like to split my lesson time between working on reading music and exercises, and working on songs, all while making it fun and challenging along the way.
Lesson 4-10I have several books and strategies I use that have proven results of students progressing in their musical careers.
Lesson 2-3Within 2-3 lessons I will have you playing along to songs, guaranteed! I will also have given you several warm-ups to work on building endurance and technique. Depending on your age, we will start working on some reading too.
What you need to bringDrum sticks and a smile!
What I can bringI can bring a drum pad and sticks, if the student does not own them yet. I also will bring books, warm-ups, and other exercises until a book is established for you to purchase.

My son has been studying with Michael for almost three years. Michael has taught him to read music, introduced him to different music styles, and always makes learning fun. He doesn't just focus on building musical knowledge, he also ensures correct playing hand position (holding the sticks correctly), technique, and approaches everything with calm and patience. My son looks forward to his lessons, is eager to ask questions, and loves playing alongside his teacher. Michael's knowledge is tremendous and his joy and passion for music shows at every lesson. l appreciate that he has added engaging elements so that beyond playing what is in the music book he has my son pick a favorite song and learn to play it. He also honors our time-he's never once been late and is always ready to get started when we arrive. Total pro!

I don't even know where to begin. Michael is such an amazing teacher with all ages. I started learning drums with him and could barely hold the sticks, and now after around 6-7 years with him I'm playing in bands and jamming to Tool and Slipknot. He has been such a great teacher and always was so passionate about teaching and always excited about how his students progressed. If you ever need someone to teach you drums whether you just started playing or have been playing for 5+ years Michael is your man!
