About your drum coach

Learning to play the drums can be a daunting challenge. I take the complexity of this instrument and break it down to where it can be understood. I make the experience fun and enjoyable. Whatever your experience level, whatever style of music you want to play, I can help you reach your musical goals.

Accomplishments

➕I have hosted many recitals throughout my career.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first thing beginners learn is how to hold the drumsticks properly. I teach them how to use rebound and let the sticks bounce. Students will also start learning how to count and play with the 1/4 note subdivision. Students will also begin learning coordination skills to play their first drum beat.
Lesson 11+Students will continue to learn and grow and play different types of songs. I encourage students to be versatile and to learn songs with different tempos, grooves, and time signatures. With drumming, the learning never ends. You can continue to learn more styles of music as long as you continue to play the instrument.
Lesson 4-10Students will continue to build on previous lessons, learning how to play the single and double stroke rolls. They will continue to deepen their understanding of groove and time. When they are, students will learn how to play and count 1/8 notes.
Lesson 2-3Students will continue to learn how to use proper stick grip and how to utilize rebound when playing. They will continue to practice limb coordination and when ready, start learning their first song.

Youth players
Working with kidsWith young students, I have them work on simple ideas. We learn fun songs to keep them interested and engaged. They learn foundational skills that they will need for their entire musical journey.

Working with teenagersTeenagers learn how to hold the sticks properly and how to count in a musical form. They will learn to play a 1/4 note groove and start practicing limb independence. When they are ready, they will learn to play their first song.

What you need to bringStudents should bring their drumsticks to their lesson. I will provide the practice pad and drumset. I also have a speaker to play their songs to practice.

What I can bringI can provide students with a pair of drumsticks. I will send the links for parents or adult students to purchase their own drumsticks, practice pad, and drum method book.

Caleb
I have seen my student grow his passion and skill in drums, which he has carried over into his school and academic life.
Barry
John is an excellent drum teacher. He has taught my son incredibly well. He’s very patient, and has a great sense of humor.
Declan
John has been teaching our son for 3 and a half years. Our son started with John at 5 almost 6 years old, he is now 9 years old and loves the drums. John started with songs that a small child enjoys and allowed him to grow has musician. As the years went on, John has challenged our son more and more with new and different songs. John is always willing to learn a song that our son would like to be taught. We hope to work with John for many years to come as our son grows as musician and drummer.
Ephraim
We’ve had a great experience with Mr. John (as we call him) as my son’s drum teacher. He is very dedicated, shows a lot of patience and takes his time to explain concepts thoroughly, making sure his students understand before moving on. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a drum teacher.
Melody
Mr. John is an excellent teacher. He has been very supportive, helpful, professional and patient with Melody. Mr John is very respectful and reliable. He is very passionate about his job. Melody’s skills have improved greatly since she started working with him.
Noelle
John does a great job with Noelle . He challenges her just like any other student . He doesn’t treat her differently because she has Special Needs. He is fun but firm and expects her to learn and apply the techniques he teaches her on the drums . He uses many methods to help her become the best drummer she can be . He is knowledgeable about both secular and Christian music which helps her to develop skills that may later enable her to play on a worship team when that opportunity arises . John is always upbeat and encouraging too !
