Beginner training plan
Your first lessonTeach them names of the drum set. How to hold the drum stick properly so they can achieve a rebound, like a basketball, and to prevent any injury!
Lesson 2-3Teach them a rudiment, most likely a “Flam” apply the first two beats on the bass drum and let them rock out to the world’s most famous drum beat by Queen, “We Will Rock You”!
Lesson 4-10Teach them the note values and how music applies to mathematics. Once note values are understood and can be played on a pad, then I would move them to the drum set and show the student Beat #1 playing 8th notes on the high hat, 2 & 4 on the snare drum and 1 and 3 on the bass drum. Once the beat has been able to be played, I would pick a song at the suitable tempo that they could play along with!
Lesson 11+Teach them how all music is made up of 4 bar phrases. How to play a drum fill to set up the beginning of a phrase. Snare drum reading, drum rudiments to help improve speed, control and endurance. Have the student pick out their favorite song and teach them the beat and the arrangement of the song, so they can not wait to play every day!🤩

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonMake sure the foundation of their drumming is covered like described in the basic training plan!
Lesson 2-3Let the student tell me what some of their visions are. Create a list of ideas including songs they want to learn or techniques they want to improve on!
Lesson 4-10Teach the student how to practice more efficiently by keeping logs every day so they can monitor their progress and improve with less and more focused practice.
Lesson 11+Different styles of music, how to solo melodically. Playing in the Pocket. How to be professional around other musicians. How to start creating your own brand. Sky is the limit to what an advanced player could learn!

What you need to bring1. Pair of sticks 2. White 3 ring binder 3. Manuscript book to write weekly assignments and to monitor the students progress.

What I can bringTwo high end Pearl drum sets, Sabian cymbals, Aquarian drum heads and Vater sticks! Wireless Bluetooth headphones so we can play to Spotify and a metronome!

My son has been taking drum lessons with Joe for seven months now, and the progress has been incredible. Joe has a natural gift for making classes both engaging and entertaining, which keeps my son genuinely excited to practice. From a student’s perspective, my son finds Joe incredibly nice, patient, and considerate. He appreciates that Joe tailors the music to his specific skill level while still pushing him to improve. Joe doesn’t just focus on the songs; he ensures the technical basics are covered, from proper grip and technique to the practical side of things, like how to correctly adjust and maintain the drum set. He manages to pack a lot of learning into a short amount of time without it ever feeling overwhelming. We highly recommend him!

I have been playing the drums for over 30 years, and I have studied with some great drummers. I found that the art of drumming is best learned through hands on personal lessons. The drums are physical, so an in person lesson with a teacher is best. The art of drumming has skill and tradition that is only passed on through lessons. Joe DeRose understands the art of drumming, and he is a great teacher. Joe has studied with many of the masters including Louie Bellson, Chad Wackerman, Freddie Gruber, and others. Joe studied at Berklee. Joe has played in gigging bands. Joe has taken what he learned, and he has distilled it down to a very usable approach to playing the drums! My lessons with Joe have taken my drumming to the next level by increasing my feel. I have improved my pocket. I simply sound better. Joe DeRose tailored lessons to meet me at my level. He makes concepts easy to understand. His approach to teaching is perfect for a beginner who wants to start off with great technique and feel from day one. Joe can also help advanced drummers improve their technique and groove!

Joe DeRose is an incredibly patient, encouraging and a knowledgeable drums teacher. Not only is he an excellent music teacher but also a very caring mentor for his students. He makes you feel at ease during his classes. Would highly recommend him for anyone looking to start drumming or improving their music skills.

Over a year later, I felt compelled to update my review. I can’t say enough good things about The DeRose School of Music & Life and about Joe himself. My son’s drumming has truly flourished under Joe’s teaching. Joe shows genuine care and enthusiasm for his students — it’s clear he wants each of them to love what they’re doing and to thrive. Keeping lessons going during a busy high school schedule hasn’t always been easy, but it has 100% been worth it. This extracurricular has become much more than just a music lesson. It’s been one of the more meaningful extracurricular experiences my son has had in high school.

I came to Joe as a beginner, not just in drums, but music in general. My experience at DeRose School of Music & Life completely changed my view on music and life! I learned the art of patience, persistence, and discipline. Joe not only taught me drumming basics, he taught me life principles and how to have fun while learning new things outside of my comfort zone, so much so that I even picked up tennis!! I can’t wait to return and continue jamming! Thanks Joe🥁
