For the first lesson, I’ll gauge your skills and your volleyball IQ. We’ll talk about your previous experience as well so I can understand more about where you’re coming from and how I can help you prioritize your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Unlike other coaches that tell you what to do, the difference here is I show you what to do so you can see different skills and strategies in real-time. You can see the advanced plays that I will want you to learn, and can emulate from me.
This is where we will put your consistency and limits to the test. This is also where mindset comes in. We will do pressured drills and time-sensitive plays for optimal sideout execution, as well as work on out of system balls for both setting and attacking. We will go through player psychology, and how different strategies can get you one or two points in any game—and when you should use those strategies. We will go through advanced skills and techniques, including option swings and jump sets, as well as drive consistency as the main factor in everything we do.
This is where we really fine-tune things like your arm-swing, your blocking technique, your digging technique, and go into complex strategy. You’ll also be able to tell me what you need to work on and what you struggle to play against—and I will come up with trainings and exercises to help you overcome those and become a highly proficient player. At an advanced level, you need consistency. We will also do a deeper dive on your consistency in all aspects of your game—serve receive, diving, side out, hand setting, etc.
After finding what level you are at, we will be holding some mock games as well—where I can hone in on what you are good at, and what you need work on. You and another partner will be playing against me and we will be able to figure out what needs improvement for defense, offense, serve receive, blocking, and strategy. We will be doing drills to reinforce and strengthen areas that are weak, and will also get into fine-tuning your play.
