For a beginnerās first lesson, weāll start with anatomy and how it plays a big factor in what you do when you play.
Then weāll go over the different types of spin and float a ball has, how ti approach each, and some more conceptual understandings to improve your volleyball IQ. Remember, an average athletic build with high volleyball IQ will almost always beat a strong athletic build with low volleyball IQ. So increasing your volleyball IQ no matter how athletic you are is the name of the game.
Around lessons 11-15+, we will have gone over most fundamentals and will be going through some more advanced techniques, what to look out for, and create a plan on how to elevate your game by learning different skills that complement your body type, physiology, and your energy. Every volleyball athlete is different, and itās important to learn where someone can excel immediately, as well as what other skills need work. Depending on the level of play, we will also go into mindset during games, weather patterns, and more complex synergies. Most importantly, everything will be built on top of excellent fundamentals, and I will also be emphasizing conscious actions until it becomes muscle memory and second nature.
Lessons 4-10 will be fine tuning techniqueāthis is where we will go into specific drills that will help train different muscles and skills. Iāll be giving different exercises to take back home so you can build the proper flexibility and strength as well. We will also start going into strategy and game sense.
The problem with learning fundamentals and technique is that it can be boring, so for our 2nd and 3rd lessons, Iām going to be teaching some fun and very cool tricks and things that you can implement in your game to make it more fun and enjoyable! We will be going over more fundamentals too, but itāll be a mix~
For the first lesson, Iāll gauge your skills and your volleyball IQ. Weāll talk about your previous experience as well so I can understand more about where youāre coming from and how I can help you prioritize your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Unlike other coaches that tell you what to do, the difference here is I show you what to do so you can see different skills and strategies in real-time. You can see the advanced plays that I will want you to learn, and can emulate from me.
This is where we will put your consistency and limits to the test. This is also where mindset comes in. We will do pressured drills and time-sensitive plays for optimal sideout execution, as well as work on out of system balls for both setting and attacking. We will go through player psychology, and how different strategies can get you one or two points in any gameāand when you should use those strategies. We will go through advanced skills and techniques, including option swings and jump sets, as well as drive consistency as the main factor in everything we do.
This is where we really fine-tune things like your arm-swing, your blocking technique, your digging technique, and go into complex strategy. Youāll also be able to tell me what you need to work on and what you struggle to play againstāand I will come up with trainings and exercises to help you overcome those and become a highly proficient player. At an advanced level, you need consistency. We will also do a deeper dive on your consistency in all aspects of your gameāserve receive, diving, side out, hand setting, etc.
After finding what level you are at, we will be holding some mock games as wellāwhere I can hone in on what you are good at, and what you need work on. You and another partner will be playing against me and we will be able to figure out what needs improvement for defense, offense, serve receive, blocking, and strategy. We will be doing drills to reinforce and strengthen areas that are weak, and will also get into fine-tuning your play.
