Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFor a beginner’s first lesson, we’ll start with anatomy and how it plays a big factor in what you do when you play. Then we’ll go over the different types of spin and float a ball has, how ti approach each, and some more conceptual understandings to improve your volleyball IQ. Remember, an average athletic build with high volleyball IQ will almost always beat a strong athletic build with low volleyball IQ. So increasing your volleyball IQ no matter how athletic you are is the name of the game.
Lesson 11+Around lessons 11-15+, we will have gone over most fundamentals and will be going through some more advanced techniques, what to look out for, and create a plan on how to elevate your game by learning different skills that complement your body type, physiology, and your energy. Every volleyball athlete is different, and it’s important to learn where someone can excel immediately, as well as what other skills need work. Depending on the level of play, we will also go into mindset during games, weather patterns, and more complex synergies. Most importantly, everything will be built on top of excellent fundamentals, and I will also be emphasizing conscious actions until it becomes muscle memory and second nature.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4-10 will be fine tuning technique—this is where we will go into specific drills that will help train different muscles and skills. I’ll be giving different exercises to take back home so you can build the proper flexibility and strength as well. We will also start going into strategy and game sense.
Lesson 2-3The problem with learning fundamentals and technique is that it can be boring, so for our 2nd and 3rd lessons, I’m going to be teaching some fun and very cool tricks and things that you can implement in your game to make it more fun and enjoyable! We will be going over more fundamentals too, but it’ll be a mix~

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonFor the first lesson, I’ll gauge your skills and your volleyball IQ. We’ll talk about your previous experience as well so I can understand more about where you’re coming from and how I can help you prioritize your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Unlike other coaches that tell you what to do, the difference here is I show you what to do so you can see different skills and strategies in real-time. You can see the advanced plays that I will want you to learn, and can emulate from me.
Lesson 11+This is where we will put your consistency and limits to the test. This is also where mindset comes in. We will do pressured drills and time-sensitive plays for optimal sideout execution, as well as work on out of system balls for both setting and attacking. We will go through player psychology, and how different strategies can get you one or two points in any game—and when you should use those strategies. We will go through advanced skills and techniques, including option swings and jump sets, as well as drive consistency as the main factor in everything we do.
Lesson 4-10This is where we really fine-tune things like your arm-swing, your blocking technique, your digging technique, and go into complex strategy. You’ll also be able to tell me what you need to work on and what you struggle to play against—and I will come up with trainings and exercises to help you overcome those and become a highly proficient player. At an advanced level, you need consistency. We will also do a deeper dive on your consistency in all aspects of your game—serve receive, diving, side out, hand setting, etc.
Lesson 2-3After finding what level you are at, we will be holding some mock games as well—where I can hone in on what you are good at, and what you need work on. You and another partner will be playing against me and we will be able to figure out what needs improvement for defense, offense, serve receive, blocking, and strategy. We will be doing drills to reinforce and strengthen areas that are weak, and will also get into fine-tuning your play.

Youth players
Working with kidsVolleyball is a wonderful sport, and as a kid, it’s important to fall in love with this sport before learning fundamentals and drills and all the boring stuff. Part of my lessons will be about theory as kids are curious and love to learn, and then we will apply those with fun drills. I’ll be teaching them cool skills that they can use to show off to their friends, and we will start going into technique—but at a fun and comfortable pace. Lastly, we will be training with a safety first mindset—this means teaching kids how to dive (for example, making sure your chin is always up when diving for a ball) or no matter what, don’t go under the net, so as to not collide with other kids. The other thing we will do is get very comfortable with the sand. Making sure they’re not afraid to dive for every ball is key to making them amazing volleyball players! I will also be adjusting the fun-to-seriousness based on the children’s wishes as well as the parents’ wishes. More serious athletes with different goals will get separately trained than athletes that want to enjoy volleyball and are still seeing if it’s the right sport for them!

Working with teenagersThere are multiple reasons why teenagers would want to learn volleyball, and a few of them are: - joining the middle school or high school team with all their friends or to make friends (teams give teens a great sense of community) - realizing sports are important for college apps (fun fact, IV League schools were initially built as sports-centric schools before branching out more heavily into education) - already playing but want to get better to accomplish some goal (make varsity, get a scholarship for college, etc.) Teens also have a lot going on in their lives—they have school, social circles, and it can feel like the whole world is depending on them. I like to create a positive and fun environment while honing the necessary skills for rapid improvement and advancement. Unlike pre-teen and adult years, teenagers want fast improvement because every week is a new struggle—a new challenge. I’ll be creating a training schedule and helping them get into a routine so they can build consistency and a strong mindset. One of the most important things as a teen playing sports with tons of other teens is composure. We will be training this frequently so athletes can stay calm in stressful, competitive, or nerve-wracking environments.

What you need to bringStay hydrated - beach volleyball can take a lot out of you, especially with the environment. I recommend having some electrolytes in your water! If you have a volleyball or multiple, feel free to bring them. Sunglasses, sunblock, a cap or a bandana—all optional but could help protect your skin and eyes from sun damage and to prevent sand from going into the eyes~

What I can bringAt the Beach House, we will be reserving a net and will have balls to train with. At Carson Beach, I’ll bring a ball and depending on how we want to train, I’ll have someone set up a net for us too.
