With over 50 years of performing and teaching experience, Dennis Frati brings a lifetime of musicianship to every lesson. A seasoned double bassist and bass guitarist, Dennis has worked across orchestral, jazz, chamber, studio, and live performance settings. His career has been built not only on playing, but on helping students develop strong technique, confident musicality, and a genuine love for their instrument. His teaching style combines traditional fundamentals with real-world musicianship — so students don’t just practice… they learn how to play music. Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFor a true beginner, we will practice how to properly hold the bass, standing or sitting. The names of the strings, parts of it and how to read music notes on a page.
Lesson 11+Develop strong sense of time, building solid grooves, rhythmic patterns, solid walking bass lines, improving over chord changes. I ConocoPhillips
Lesson 4-10Learning and memorize the Circle of Fifths, learn scales and arpeggios. Understand chord theory, understanding, chords progressions.
Lesson 2-3Learn about positions on the fingerboard, learning fingerings using all 4 fingers. Practice counting, note values and beginning rhythms.
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonWorking on the bow hand for better, cleaner tone production on the double bass and cello, along with some major scales. For bass guitar, developing a strong sense of rhythm, tempo and groove.
Lesson 4-10Learn all major & minor key signatures. Play 1 and 2 octave scales on all the instruments. Working on chord progressions, chord changes and walking bass line structure.
Lesson 2-3Rhythm patterns, fingering in the higher positions on the fingerboard for all of the string instruments learning the proper position techniques.
What you need to bringStudents need to have a bass guitar to practice on during the week. I have another extra double bass that the student who come to my studio can play during our class. They will also need to purchase the printed music book(s) used in their class. A desire to practice, learn and work on their instrument to develop the necessary skills to make music!😊
What I can bringI use an assortment of bass guitar and double bass instructional books, along with printed music, for learning to read the notes, learn the string names, proper fingering and building techniques to play and understand music theory. I will share my years of playing and coaching the bass professionally, to every lesson with the goal of bringing you successfully, into the incredible fun world of music making. 😊
