Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first basketball lesson will focus on fundamental skills in a fun, positive environment, starting with introductions and a warm-up, then breaking down dribbling, passing, and shooting form. Use age-appropriate equipment, like smaller balls or lower rims, to build confidence and prevent bad habits. The primary goals are to teach the "core four" skills (shooting, passing, dribbling, defense), to ensure players have fun, and build a solid foundation rather than focusing on complex strategies or winning.
Lesson 4-10The primary objectives of this lesson would be to
improve advanced dribbling and passing techniques, introduce the concept of offensive movement without the ball, develop basic defensive stances and principles, combine skills in a "read and react" context. This to include: dynamic warm-up, dribbling and ball handling progression, passing and cutting drills, defensive stance and positioning, combine play ( 3 on 3 / 4 on 4), Wrap up and cool down.
Lesson 2-3An effective second and third basketball lesson expands on the fundamentals from the first session, emphasizing passing, footwork, and more complex dribbling. I would start with a conversation to discuss feedback from first session and discuss levels of comfortability. Incorporate fun, competitive elements to keep players engaged and build their game awareness. To include: dynamic warm-up, dribbling and ball handling progression, partner passing and foot work, lay ups and finishing, competitive drill and scrimmage, and cool down.
Youth players
Working with kidsTo adapt basketball training for kids, you must make practices fun and active while still focusing on the fundamentals like dribbling, passing, and shooting. Promoting successes, building confidence, and providing constructive feedback to let players know what they are doing well and how to improve I key. I encourage teamwork and positive behavior. But most importantly, I provide an age appropriate practice structure by ensuring practice length is reasonable to prevent burnout and that there are rest days for recovery.
