Beginner training plan
Your first training sessionEvaluate the player’s current skill level, coordination, confidence, and understanding of the game. Introduce proper shooting form, ball-handling fundamentals, footwork, passing, and finishing. Keep the session challenging but fun while building confidence.
Training Session 2-3Reinforce proper technique and begin building consistency. Work on stationary and moving ball-handling, shooting form, layups with both hands, passing, defensive stance, and footwork. Correct bad habits early before they become permanent.
Training Session 4-10Progress from learning skills to using them at game speed. Add combination dribbles, shooting off the dribble and catch, finishing from different angles, defensive movement, change of direction, decision-making, and competitive drills.
Training Session 11+Develop the player based on their individual strengths and weaknesses. Increase game-speed repetitions, pressure, decision-making, and basketball IQ while continuing to sharpen fundamentals. The goal is for skills to become instinctive and transfer directly into games.
