The first lesson is an evaluation of the player’s current skill level and fundamentals. We’ll work through basic ball handling, footwork, shooting and finishing so I can identify strengths and areas that need improvement. From there, I build a training plan around the individual player.
We begin building a strong foundation through repetition and proper technique. The focus is on ball control, footwork, shooting mechanics, finishing and coordination. I want players to understand how and why each skill is performed, not simply complete drills.
As the fundamentals improve, we gradually increase the difficulty, pace and movement of the drills. Players begin combining skills, making decisions and applying what they’ve learned in more game-like situations while continuing to reinforce their fundamentals.
Training continues to progress based on the player’s development. Fundamentals remain a priority, but we introduce more advanced skills, movement, conditioning and game situations. As players become ready, I begin teaching basketball IQ, reads, decision-making and how to recognize and use advantages during live play.
Assess the player’s current skill level, strengths, weaknesses, movement, decision-making, and basketball IQ. We’ll establish clear goals while working through ball handling, shooting, footwork, finishing, and game situations. This gives me a baseline to build a training plan specifically for that player.
