Start by observing the players techniques. Then implement drills to fix the most important issues in their technique. In a swing, these typically are issues with balance, timing, lack of engagement of the lower body, poor bat path. Create practice plan for player to understand what they need to improve on. I will also asses the players mental approach to the game.
These lessons will be very similar to the previous ones; however, I will emphasize working on the players weaknesses in game scenarios. For example, if a player struggles with hitting against velocity, I will speed up the pitches. If a player struggles to throw strikes in full counts, I will create full count scenarios for the player to practice in. At this point, it is about getting the player to a place where they feel comfortable going into any situation in a game. My goal here is to allow the player to work through there struggles, eventually excelling in them. This is where the mental part of the game becomes so crucial.
These lessons will begin with drill work based on the players flaws and then move toward situational hitting. This allows the player to think more about their technique and approach to the game.
Continue working on same drills, ironing out the big flaws in the technique. If the player is ready to move on, meaning their previous issues are rarely occurring, start working on the more advanced parts of the swing (maximizing power, working on direction, etc.). If the player is not ready to move on, the lesson will primarily focus on performing initial drills correctly. At this point, I will push players to approach each rep with intent, thinking through what they’re doing, and why they’re doing it.
