Short answer. Superprof is a directory of tutors for more than 1,000 subjects, based in France. To contact a tutor in the US, you pay a $49 monthly Student Pass, and then you pay the tutor directly. TeachMe.To is an American marketplace for private lessons with specialist coaches who teach in person, near you. You pay for your lessons at checkout, with no subscription needed to ask a question, book, or pay. Every coach needs an approved background check. If you want a specialist who meets you at a location near you, TeachMe.To is built for that.
The Superprof facts in this post come from Superprof's own pages, its press releases, and public reviews. Each one was checked on October 15, 2026. The TeachMe.To numbers come from our own booking records for the 12 months to October 15, 2026.
The comparison at a glance
How Superprof works in the US
Superprof is a tutoring marketplace that started in France in 2013. It lists teachers for academic subjects, languages, music, and sports.
To message a tutor in the US, you buy the Student Pass. Superprof's US guide lists it at $49 a month. That is the US price, and it varies by country. You are not charged when you send a request. Superprof says the subscription activates when a tutor replies to your message. After that, it bills every month until you cancel. The charge comes from the reply, not from a lesson, so you pay the fee to find out if a coach is available. You cancel it from your account dashboard. Superprof says you keep contact with the tutors you already found after you cancel.
After you connect, Superprof says, "Scheduling lessons and paying for them is conducted directly between you and your tutor." You can pay the tutor offline, or through Superprof's booking system. Tutors who take payment through Superprof pay a 10% processing fee.
The price of the pass changes by country. Superprof's own replies mention $69 in Australia and CHF 58 in Switzerland. If you are outside the US, check the price on your country's site.
The free first lesson, and what it costs
Superprof profiles often show "1st lesson free." This is a choice each tutor makes, not a Superprof rule. Superprof's tutor guide suggests tutors "Offer a free 20-30 minute lesson." A typical TeachMe.To lesson is 60 minutes. Some Superprof golf profiles describe the free first lesson as a session to define your goals, and say lessons can also be online.
That free lesson is not free of cost to you. To book it, you first buy the Student Pass. If you keep the pass while you take lessons, it charges $49 every month on top of the tutor's rate.
Recent Superprof reviews on Trustpilot show where this goes wrong. Several reviewers in September and October 2026 say they expected a free lesson and did not see that the charge was a monthly subscription.
Superprof says the pass is labeled as monthly on the payment page and that it sends a reminder email before renewal. If you use Superprof, put the renewal date in your calendar.
Hire a specialist, not a "tutor"
Superprof's US golf pages are titled "Golf tutors near me," and its city pages read "Golf tutors in" followed by the city. A tutor is the right word for algebra. For golf, tennis, pickleball, or any craft you want to get good at, you want a coach who specializes in it: someone who plays it, teaches it, and knows how to fix your swing or your serve.
On TeachMe.To, you search coaches by what they teach and where. In the past 12 months, more than 850 pickleball coaches, more than 700 tennis coaches, and 600 golf coaches taught lessons. Each one teaches their own specialty. Your coach meets you at a location from their profile and reserves it for you.
Based in the US
TeachMe.To is an American company. Our coaches taught in more than 200 US metro areas in the past 12 months.
Superprof is a French company. It started in France in 2013, and its own press release from September 2026 is datelined Paris and refers to its headquarters in Paris. The same release says the US became Superprof's largest market in 2025. If you prefer to buy lessons from a US company, this difference matters.
How TeachMe.To works
TeachMe.To is a marketplace for private lessons with specialist coaches, in person and near you.
- Find a coach. Search by what you want to learn and where. Each coach's card shows their lowest price per lesson, which is the per-lesson price of their largest pack.
- Book and pay. Choose a single lesson or a pack of lessons, a time, and a location. You pay at checkout. Lessons you paid for and have not taken yet are prepaid lessons. They stay valid for 12 months.
- Show up. Your coach reserves every location listed on their profile. If a location charges a fee, the location card shows it, and it is not included in the lesson price.
You don't pay a fee to see if a coach is available. You can send a question from a coach's page before you book, at no cost. There is no free first lesson. Your first lesson is a full paid lesson.
What makes TeachMe.To different: the numbers
These numbers come from completed lessons on TeachMe.To from October 2025 to October 2026.
- Sports specialists first. 99 of every 100 completed lessons were sports lessons. Music lessons make up most of the rest.
- In person, almost only. More than 99% of completed lessons happened in person. Fewer than 50 of more than 55,000 lessons were online.
- Coaches in your sport. More than 2,700 sports coaches taught at least one lesson. That includes more than 850 pickleball coaches, more than 700 tennis coaches, and 600 golf coaches.
- Full first lessons. Of the first lessons in a booking, 99% were 60 minutes or longer. Fewer than 1% were 30 minutes.
- Where lessons happen. Coaches taught in more than 200 US metro areas. The metro areas with the most coaches were Los Angeles (more than 280), Miami (more than 150), New York (more than 140), San Francisco, and Dallas (more than 130 each).
- 25 sports. Golf, tennis, and pickleball are 90% of lessons. Soccer, basketball, baseball, surfing, and volleyball follow.
Refunds: what you can get back
On TeachMe.To, you pay up front, so the refund rules matter. There are three refund paths:
- Cancellation policy. Cancel within 24 hours of making your booking, when your lesson is not in the next 24 hours, and you get a full refund.
- First-lesson risk-free guarantee. If your first lesson is not a good fit, contact support within 24 hours of that lesson. We match you with a different coach, or give you a refund.
- Your coach doesn't confirm. We help you switch to another coach nearby, or give you a full refund.
Aside from our cancellation policy, our first-lesson risk-free guarantee, and a full refund if your coach doesn't confirm your booking, prepaid lessons are non-refundable and expire one year from the date of purchase. You can read the full policy in Refunds and lesson expiry.
On Superprof, you pay the tutor directly in most cases, so a refund for a lesson is between you and the tutor. Superprof's student guide does not state a refund policy for the Student Pass. Some Trustpilot reviewers say Superprof refused to refund the pass after a tutor accepted their request.
Coach checks
Superprof says tutors upload credentials before their profile goes live, and its UK blog says it verifies teachers' identity and qualifications.
On TeachMe.To, every coach needs an approved background check to keep teaching after their first month. A coach can submit an existing valid check or get a new one through our partner, Dots.
